What is a Retirement Visa?

The Thailand Retirement Visa (officially known as the Non-Immigrant O Visa) is designed for people aged 50 and over who want to settle down and enjoy a long term life in Thailand. This visa allows you to stay in the country for up to one year at a time and can be renewed every year without needing to leave Thailand. Unlike a tourist visa or the DTV visa, it gives you long term security and the freedom to enjoy your retirement without constant travel or renewals.

Who Can Apply?

To apply for a retirement visa, you need to be at least 50 years old and meet certain financial requirements. You can qualify by having a security deposit of 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, which needs to be held for at least two months before your visa application. Alternatively, you can show a regular monthly income of at least 65,000 THB, such as a pension. It’s also possible to combine savings and income to reach a total of 800,000 THB per year.

In addition to proving your financial status, you’ll need a valid passport with at least 18 months remaining before expiry, recent passport sized photos and completed application forms. You’ll also need to show evidence of your financial standing, either through bank statements, income letters from your embassy or a combination of both.

In some cases, you may be asked for extra documents such as a medical certificate, police clearance or proof of health insurance, depending on where you’re applying from. Don’t worry if this sounds complicated as we will explain exactly what you’ll need and help organise every document required.

How Long Does the Visa Last?

Once approved your retirement visa allows you to stay in Thailand for up to one year. This visa can be renewed annually, as long as you continue to meet the financial requirements and renewals can be completed inside Thailand, making it easy to maintain your residency without having to travel or reapply from overseas. Once issued, you’ll have the freedom to relax and enjoy your time here, knowing your stay is legal and secure. Your visa can be renewed year after year, providing ongoing stability for as long as you wish to stay.

What Happens After You Receive Your Visa?

Once your visa is approved, there are a few ongoing responsibilities to be aware of. Every 90 days, you’re required to report your current residential address to the local immigration office. This can be done in person, online or by post and we can also handle this reporting for you if you prefer.

If you need to travel during the year, you can apply for a re-entry permit to ensure your visa stays valid while you’re outside the country. Finally, it’s important to remember that the retirement visa does not allow you to work in Thailand as it’s strictly designed for retirees seeking a peaceful, work free lifestyle.

The Application Process

There are several ways to apply for your Thai retirement visa. You can choose to apply from your home country through the Thai Embassy or Consulate, although not all embassies offer this service and the process may require extra paperwork, such as a medical certificate, police clearance or proof of health insurance.

Alternatively, you can enter Thailand on a 90-Day Non-Immigrant O Visa and apply for your retirement visa once you’re here. This is often the simplest option and avoids the need for additional paperwork required for embassy applications.

If you’re already in Thailand on a tourist visa, it’s also possible to convert your visa and apply for a retirement visa without needing to leave the country. We can assist with this process, guiding you through each step and ensuring a smooth application.

To qualify for a Thai retirement visa, you need to meet the following basic criteria:
